More commonly known as laughing gas. Nitrous Oxide is the oldest form of sedation for dentistry. Laughing gas is administered before and during dental treatment, typically through a small mask that fits over the nose. It lets you stay awake the entire procedure which means you can advise your dentist how you feel with the gas and if you want it adjusted for you.
Oral sedation is another technique for sedation that, as the term suggests, is received through the mouth. It is usually used along with pain-reducing methods. One example of oral sedative is Ativan, which is commonly used in dental offices. Ativan is administered one hour before your treatment. This medication makes you feel more calm while in the dental chair. Oral sedatives may take longer to wear off, therefore, you will need to have someone to drive you home.
Sedation is designed to help all patients maintain their dental health, regardless of your anxiety level. It brings you to a deeply relaxed state. You will still be able to respond as the dental team talks to you. Also, the staff makes sure to monitor your vital signs throughout the entire procedure. You will recall little or none of your stay in the dental chair. This is why dentists advise that you ask someone to come with you and drive you home after your treatment (not necessary for nitrous oxide).
