Is sedation treatment for dentistry right for you? Get started by asking yourself these questions:

  1. Do you feel stressed or anxious merely thinking about dental visits?
  2. Do your worries often stop you from seeing your dentist?
  3. Do you not feel comfortable about needles?
  4. Does the dental office environment make you feel uneasy?
  5. Did you have dental-related traumas when you were a kid?

If you just responded yes to any of the questions above, then sedation may be a suitable option for you. Getting dental work done doesn’t have to involve sleepless nights and stressful days.

Deer Valley Dental Care Offers Sedation

At Deer Valley Dental Care, we help patients receive dental treatments they need as comfortably as possible. We understand that even routine dental procedures may be difficult for some. We work hard to minimize any emotional trauma you may be enduring.

How Sedation Treatment for Dentistry Works

Sedation is designed to help all patients maintain their dental health, regardless of your anxiety level. It brings you to a deeply relaxed state. You will still be able to respond as the dental team talks to you. Also, the staff makes sure to monitor your vital signs throughout the entire procedure. Chances are you will recall little or none of your stay in the dental chair. This is why dentists advise that you ask someone to come with you and drive you home after your treatment (not necessary for nitrous oxide).

Common Forms of Sedation for Dentistry

  • Nitrous Oxide. Nitrous oxide gas is also known as the laughing gas. Nitrous Oxide is the oldest form of sedation for dentistry. Laughing gas is administered before and during dental treatment, typically through a small mask that fits over the nose. It lets you stay awake the entire procedure which means you can advise your dentist how you feel with the gas and if you want it adjusted for you.
  • Oral Sedation. Oral sedation is another technique for sedation that, as the term suggests, is received through the mouth. It is usually used along with pain-reducing methods. One example of oral sedative is Ativan, which is commonly used in dental offices. Ativan is administered one hour before your treatment. This medication makes you feel more calm while in the dental chair. Unlike nitrous oxide, oral sedatives may take longer to wear off, therefore, you will need to have someone to drive you home.
  • Intravenous (IV) sedation. This type of sedation works fastest as it’s applied directly to the vein. With IV sedation, your dentist is able to adjust sedation levels. For some patients IV sedation can be a deeper sedation than the oral version.  You may also find your recovery is faster with IV sedation but you will still need someone to drive you home.
